Cleaning and Taking Care of Your Velvet Slipper
Cleaning and Taking Care of Your Velvet Slipper

The luxurious velvet material used to make our shoes here at DARA is very delicate. It picks up dirt and dust quite easily due to its pile and its important to take extra care of your velvet slippers after they are worn. One of the common questions we get from our customers is "How do I clean my Slippers?", well we're going to help address that problem today.

A lot of companies out there advertise fancy sprays, brushes and solutions, but we recommend going the simple route, that wont cost you a lot of money. All you need are;

  1. Soft bristle brush - we recommend a toothbrush
  2. Laundry detergent
  3. Water
  4. Towel
  5. Bowl

STEP 1.

Combine 1 part laundry detergent with 3 parts lukewarm water in a small bowl or container. Be sure to combine the mixture properly and create a lather. NOTE: Do not use any detergent with any bleaching agents or fabric softening additives as that will damage your shoes. Also do not use hot water!

STEP 2.

Dip your brush into the container and gently rub on the affected area(s) of the velvet slipper. Be sure to move the brush in the direction of the grain, and not against the grain. As you clean the slipper with the brush, apply light pressure, but making sure the bristles of the brush are not bending. If you notice bristles bending, you are cleaning too rigorously, which could case damage to the velvet fibers. We recommend repeating this cleaning procedure on small spots at a time.

STEP 3.

Now comes the cleaning part. Grab a small towel and wipe the shoe carefully, again in the direction of the grain to dry it off. Leave to dry for about 15 to 20 minutes, and inspect to make sure it was cleaned properly. If it wasn't, repeat step 2 again.

For hard to remove stains, such as greasy food, or drinks, you can use a combination of water and rubbing alcohol and use the soft bristle brush to spread it on the affected spot. Allow it to air dry, and clean. For stains like these, its important to clean with the alcohol + water combination as soon as possible. The longer it remains unaddressed, the longer the stain has to set, making it even more difficult to remove.

The best way to care for your velvet slippers is to prevent any accidents, but we all know thats almost impossible. Take the steps outlined above to keep your shoes looking great and in excellent condition.
